The novel is an example of cautionary literature about political and social movements that overthrow corrupt and undemocratic governments and institutions, only to become corrupt and oppressive themselves by falling into the pitfalls of power, using violent and dictatorial methods to maintain it. It provides real-world examples from former African colonies such as Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which were taken over by local leaders who were more corrupt and tyrannical than the European colonizers they had expelled.
